The design of structural members and specifically the passive protection for the same can be optimized by the use of structural fire engineering. This type of analysis evaluates the thermal effects of fires on structural members. By the use of heat transfer and finite element analysis the structural response to design fires can be determined, and in this way it is possible to assess the structures strength in fire conditions.
