The Chilean Public Works Ministry (MOP) presented this project in 2012, with preliminary design being two three-lane tunnels stretching 13 km to link Grecia Avenue in the south and El Salto Avenue in the north in the eastern part of Santiago de Chile, completing the city’s beltway.

The project, known as Americo Vespucio Oriente (AVO), will reach 40 m-deep, will cross seven communes and has an estimated cost of EUR1.3 billion.

OHL Concessions and Sacyr Concessions submitted the winning proposal for the construction and concession of Santiago de Chile’s Americo Vespucio Oriente urban highway. The project comprises building and operating a 9.3 km urban highway, large sections of which will have three lanes in each direction. Some of the more prominent work among the primary projects on this highway, which will stretch across five Chilean communes (La Reina, Las Condes, Vitacura, Recoleta and Huechuraba), include the tunnel under the San Cristobal hill and Mapocho river, improvements to the pre-existing surface roadways in La Piramide, and two underwater carriageways from the south side of the Centenario bridge to Príncipe de Gales.

We are involved in a 6km stretch of two three lanes unidirectional road tunnels forming part of ring road. We started our involvement with the project in 2014 and we have continued all the way through 2015 and but we expect our involvement to decrease significantly during the first months of 2016.

It has been a really interesting and giving project for us, our focus has been on the ventilation design (normal traffic mode and emergency mode) where we have performed a significant number of 1-D analysis (SES) and 3-D analysis (CFD), our involvement has made it possible to significantly optimize the ventilation design with considerable cost savings for the project, we have also been involved in basically all areas related to fire safety. Ventilation design and fire safety are key issues for tunnel projects and our involvement brought a know-how and experience that have left a constructive and positive impact on the project.
